The story
Thomson's Black Spruce in Autumn is a small oil sketch from the fall of 1915, now in the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Kleinburg, Ontario. This collage is within an inch of its size in both directions.
The woman is from Edgar Degas's After the Bath, a title Degas used for many pastels and paintings between about 1883 and the end of the century. With them is an advertisement from The Dominion Illustrated of 1889.
