A hand-coloured plate from the 1904 edition of Royal Academy Art of the sculpture by Henry Alfred Pegram. Pegram originally exhibited a plaster version of this symbolist piece at the Royal Academy in 1891. The completed marble and crystal ball masterpiece was purchased under the terms of the Chantrey Bequest and featured in the Royal Academy Pictures 1904 catalogue. It dramatically illustrates a prophetic woman (a sibyl) gazing into a crystal ball, foretelling a disaster to her companion who drops disconsolately across her knees. The piece is currently housed at Tate Britain in London.
